SSS OPENS BRANCH OFFICE IN HONG KONG

Guangzhou, 19 January 1999. The Philippine Social Security System recently opened its branch office in Hong Kong to service Overseas Filipino Workers in Hong Kong and Southern China. The office is located at the Philippine Consulate General, Hong Kong, 6th Floor, United Centre Bldg., 95 Queensway, Admiralty, Hong Kong; telephone number (852) 2143-6394; fax (852)2377-9556; e-mail: Pssso31@IBM.net. PINOY EASTER FIESTA IN GUANGZHOU

Guangzhou, 14 April 1999. The Easter Sunday Mass was successfully held on 4 April 1999. It was organized by the Filipino group Couples for Christ, which was spearheaded by two couples, namely, Brother Alex and Sister Flor Cabral (Nestle), and Brother Israel and Sister Sally Silud (Procter and Gamble). It was held at the Guangzhou Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with address at Yi de Lu Jiao Bu Qian 56 Hao. The English mass was concelebrated by Father Thomas and guest Filipino priest Fr. Francisco Makabenta. A large group of Filipinos, other foreigners and local people filled the Cathedral. As a result of the big turnout, leaders of the Guangdong Chinese Catholic Patriotic Church, headed by Mr. Carl Liu, agreed to have a regular English mass every sunday at 10:30 a.m. Please pass this information on to other Filipinos in Guangdong Province should they find themselves in Guangzhou on Sundays.

INDEPENDENCE DAY THANKSGIVING MASS

The Filipino Community in Southern China held a Thanksgiving Mass to commemorate the 101st Anniversary of the Philippine Independence on 13 June 1999 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at Yi De Lu Jiao Bu Qian 56 Hao, Guangzhou. Immediately after the Mass, a simple "Salo-salo" was held at the 2nd Floor of the Social Hall. COnsul General Cruz and Bishop James addressed the Filipinos gathered at the meeting.

VISIT TO CHINA BY GOV. FERDINAND R. MARCOS, JR.

Ilocos Norte GOVERNOR FERDINAND (Bongbong) R. MARCOS, Jr. visited Beijing, Qingdao, Jinan and Dezhou cities of Shandong Province, and Guangzhou from 13 to 20 July 1999. The Governor was accompanied by his beautiful spouse, LISA ARANETA-MARCOS, and an entourage of nine officials and businessmen. During his visit to Guangzhou (19-20 July), the Governor expressed his great interest on the welfare of the overseas Filipino workers in Guangzhou.

FILIPINO COMMUNITY MEETING WITH LABOR OFFICIALS

Guangzhou, 10 October. The Filipino Community in Guangzhou successfully held this afternoon a meeting with the officials of the Department of Labor and Employment headed by Atty. "Jolly" de la Torre, Assistant Labor Attache in Hong Kong. The meeting was held at the White Swan Hotel, Guangzhou. Around 220 members of the Filipino community coming from different parts of Guangdong Province attended the meeting. Representatives from OWWA, Pag-Ibig Fund and SSS were also on hand to issue certificates and forms for membership with their respective agencies. The team from the Office of the Labor Attache in Hong Kong promised to return to Guangzhou on the first Sundays of November and December 1999 to accommodate other applicants for membership with OWWA, SSS and Pag-Ibig Fund, and for those who wish to secure OEC-POEA certificates. Individual labor cases can also be discussed during these next two monthly visits. The meeting was also an occasion for members of the Filipino community to discuss with the offials of the Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou and the visiting delegation from DOLE various issues related to their visa status, labor problems and taxation. The group likewise agreed to discuss preparations for the Third Christmas Party of the Filipino community on 7 November at the Philippine Consulate General. White Swan Hotel, to coincide with the second visit of the labor team from Hong Kong. PASKONG PINOY SA MILENYO

Guangzhou, 5 December. The Third Christmas Party for the Filipino Community in Southern China was held on Sunday, 5 December 1999 at the White Swan Hotel, Shamian Island, Guangzhou. The Christmas Party, which started at 11:00 a.m. was graced by the Consuls General from Poland, Thailand, U.S.A., officers from the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangdong Provincial People's Government, and the sponsors. The successful Paskong Pinoy sa Milenyo was attended by about 500 persons. Songs and dances were presented by the members of the Filipino community coming from different places in Guangdong Province. Grand prizes were given during the raffling of tickets and the Parlor games. Paskong Pinoy was highlighted by a play, "The nativity of Jesus Christ." Santa Claus, portrayed by the US Consul Mr. Alfred Gonzales, assisted by two lovely girls, distributed their sacks load of gifts to all the children who were present during the Christmas Party. Among the 50 children, who queued to receive their gifts, the youngest was a three-months old baby girl.

FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICERS EXAMINATION

Guangzhou, 12 January 2000. The Board of Foreign Service Examinations is conducting the FSO examination on 28, 29 and 30 April 2000. FSO Examination consists of three parts: Part I - FSO pre-qualifying test; Part II - FSO written examination; and, Part III - FSO oral examination. The Board of Foreign Service Examinations has decided that only Part I of the Foreign Service Examinations will be conducted abroad at the following testing centers: a. Philippine Embassy, Washington, D.C. b. Philippine Embassy, Vienna; and, c. Philippine Embassy, Riyadh. Part II (FSO written examination) will be conducted in the Philippines at the following testing centers: a) Manila d) Zamboanga City b) Cebu City e) Cotabato City c) Iloilo City f) Tuguegarao, Cagayan Part III (FSO oral examination) will likewise be conducted in Manila, Philippines at a date to be determined later. Interested parties, who are in Guangdong Province, may get copies of the announcements and the application forms from the Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou, located at 4th Floor, Room Nos. 423 - 424, White Swan Hotel, Shamian Island, Guangzhou, (Attn: Miss Josie M.
